Rules for Print and Slide Competitions - Revised 2003
1. Entry to club competitions shall be limited to honorary and paid-up members of the club. Each member may enter not more than three slides and/or three prints in any one competition. Marks will be awarded by the judge for each entry, and these will be recorded, but for the purposes of the club championship ( See Rules 15 and 18) only the highest marks gained for two slides and/or two prints will be carried forward.
2. There shall be two classes of entry:- (B) Beginners and (O) Open. Any theme set for a competition shall apply to both classes.
3. A new member of the club will normally submit entries in class B, but on the advice of the Competition Secretary, the new member may be immediately transferred by the Committee to class O.
4. Entry to the open class shall be by the decision of the Committee, following advice from the Competition Secretary. Such transfers shall be effective from the first competition following the Annual Competition, except where Rule 3 is applied. Normally a new member will be transferred to the open class at the end of his or her first complete calendar year with the club.
5. All entries will be awarded points to a maximum of ten.
6. No member shall enter a slide and a print produced from the same original image on the same evening.
7. A slide or print may not be entered for competitions more than twice, excluding the Annual Competition, the Don Beney Cup, the Charles Mutton Cup, Ladies v Gentlemen, informal competitions and extemal competitions. For the rules of the Bency and Mutton Cups see Section B.
8. Slides entered for the Ladies v Gentlemen competion shall not have previously been entered in any of the club competitions in any form, including previous entry as a print. The Ladies v Gents competition shall consist of 20 slides chosen by each captain in accordance with Rule 8. This competition is normally less formal.
9. The entire content of a print or slide must be the copyright of the author. No form of "clip art" is permissible.
10. Prints and slides for all club competitions including the Don Beney and Charles Mutton Cups and the Ladies v Gents should be submitted with titles which will be announced. Titles are particularly helpful in "Nature" photography: i.e. Species of plant, fungus, insect, animal or bird. An author who does not wish to have a title announced may submit his/her work as "untitled" or "no title". A title will, however, be required by the Competition Secretary for identification purposes within the club, but such title will not be announced. Titles for Federation and inter-club competitions will not be announced unless agreed between the clubs before judging begins.
11. Prints shall be no smaller than 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches (16.5 x 11.5 cm.) in size (excluding mount), and no larger than 50cm X 40cm (20 X 16 inches), including the mount.
12. All prints shall be mounted, except those of first year beginners, which may be entered unmounted.
13. Prints must bear on the back the competitor's name and print title. Only the title, if the competitor wishes, may appear on the front.
14. Prints may be trade processed.
15. The member gaining, the most points for prints in each class in accordance with Rule 1 during the calendar year shall be deemed the Open Print Champion and the Beginners Print Champion respectively. The GOLDSMITH Cup will be awarded to the Open Print Champion, and the CAMERASOUIND Cup to the Beginners Print Champion.
16. Slides must be correctly spotted and bear the competitor's name and a title for identification purposes. When a slide is viewed directly by eye the spot must be in the lower left corner. Slides will be projected exactly as the competitor has indicated they should be viewed and will be marked accordingly.
17. Slides should be in 50 mm. Square mounts
18. The member gaining the most points for slides in each class in accordance with Rule 1 during the calendar year shall be deemed the Open Slide Champion and the Beginners Slide Champion respectively. The CLUB Cup will be awarded to the Open Slide Champion, and the LABURNUM Cup to the Beginners Slide Champion.
19. Print titles and the actual slides shall be given to the Competition Secretary not later than the meeting one week before the competition for which they are to be entered. Later entries will only be accepted at the absolute discretion of the Competition Secretary.
Annual Print and Slide Competition
I. The first two sentences of Championship Rule 1 and the whole of Rules 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17 and 19 shall apply.
II. Prints or slides entered in any previous Annual Competition are not eligible.
III. No points will be awarded.
IV. The winner of the Open Class Print competition will be aivarded the CHAIRMAN'S CHALLENGE Cup. The winner of the Beginners Class Print competition will be awarded the ASH Cup. The winner of the Open Class Slide competition will be awarded the TOLLEFSON Cup. The winner of the Beginners Class Slide competition ivill be awarded the COLOUR Cup.
Other Internal Competitions
(Currently the Ladies v Gentlemen slide competition, the Don Beney Cup print and the Charles Mutton Cup slide competition)
A. In all cases the first sentence of Championship Rule 1 shall apply.
B. The Don Beney and Charles Mutton Cups: Entries for the Don Beney Cup will be prints and for the Charles Mutton Cup will be slides on a common theme ratified by the previous Annual General Meeting. The total number of entries from each competitor ivill be 4, which may be prints, slides or a mixture of both. Entries for previous club competitions will be eligible in accordance with Rule 7. There will be only one class open to all members. No points will be awarded but in addition to the cup winners, 2nd 3rd and highly commended categories may be given.
Inter-club Competitions - selection of prints and slides
a. For Federation Panel(s) the Competition Secretary will suggest possible Prints/slides which have received high marks in Club competitions during the previous year. The final choice of prints/slides for panel(s) should be made by at least three experienced
Committee/Club members.
b For other Inter-club competitions selection may be made by the Competition Secretary.
c. Prints/slides selected for all Inter-club competitions will be in the care of the Competition Secretary (or Deputy) and will be returned to their owners as early as possible after the competition has ceased.
